FAQ

What do you mean when you say Come Together Lake Country is nonpartisan?

When we say Come Together Lake Country is nonpartisan, we mean that that as a group we are not affiliated with any political party. We understand that individuals have political beliefs and affiliations. That’s OK. In fact, we think it is great for citizens to be involved in the political process. However, Come Together Lake Country will not solicit or accept funding from any political party.

What does it mean for a board to be nonpartisan?

Our position is that candidates for nonpartisan offices do not run as a member or representative of a political party. When a political party vets and selects a candidate, and puts any sums of money or resources behind their campaign, there is at the very least an appearance of a quid pro quo. We believe candidates for nonpartisan offices should be beholden to the electorate, not a political party.

What does a school superintendent do?

The superintendent, or district administrator, runs the day-to-day operations of the district. The board sets policies. The superintendent takes action to implement the policies and make sure the district operates within the policies. The superintendent is hired by the board and is the only employee of the district that reports directly to the board.

Can I vote for all Arrowhead School Board openings?

The Arrowhead School Board has 9 seats–2 at-large seats, and 1 seat for each K-8 school district. However, all voters residing in the Arrowhead School District may vote for each seat up for election, regardless of the K-8 school district in which the voter resides. For the 2023 election, the Lake Country seat, Swallow seat, and an at-large seat will be on the ballot–even if you live in the Richmond School district–you can vote in each race.

What does a school board do anyway?

A school board leads the district by setting goals with the administrative team, determining policies for the district, and managing the resources of the district.

Have your founding members donated to political parties?

Some have inquired as to whether our “founding members” have donated to political parties. The truth is, we haven’t asked and we don’t care. Each of us has our own individual opinions and beliefs. Each of us donates to the causes we see fit. Some of our supporters are Republicans, some are Democrats, and some don’t fit neatly in any major political party. Our goal is to provide a forum where information and ideas can be exchanged  without regard to party labels or agendas. We believe that when we have civil discourse about local issues,  our common interests outweigh any political divide. We are a party-neutral organization that does not accept support from any political party. We are better when we Come Together.

My kids are grown up--why should I care about the school board?

While our school districts may most directly impact families with school-age children, the reality is that ALL of us are impacted by the success or failure of our school districts. Arrowhead High School and its K-8 feeder schools are top-notch schools. Strong schools make our communities desirable places to live, and keep our property values high.

Why is it important for school/village/town boards to be nonpartisan?

Our concern is that candidates who are vetted and supported by a political party may come into the process with an agenda that is based on a party directive and not on the particular needs of that school district. We prefer school boards to be responsive to stakeholders: the students, parents, staff, and residents of the district.
